I've been very successful using high quality packing tape. Remember to alternate from side to side every two or three strips and apply each strip from the deck's center line down past the keel. Your kayak should look like a mummy when you're done with very little wood showing.
The beauty of using tape vs ropes or even nails, is that every inch of the deck edge is pulled down to the sheers.
It's scary to begin, but you'll see - it really is easy.
