Trolling? You Bet!

You're right about the rod holder preventing application of the skirt... just another reason to ditch it. I troll by stuffing the rod in the foredeck rigging, backwards, with a loop over the crank to trap it so nothing gets yanked overboard (I also use rod floats).

The Usual Disclaimer: I'm not saying my way will work for everybody, but it turns the trick for me.
