I used the same basic process as Steve. Knock of the big runs and then 400 wet sanding until everything is dull. It doesn't take much pressure or effort.

I used four coats of Captains on the hull and three on the deck. This spring, I washed everything down with lacquer thinner, wet sanded again with 400 grit to remove last season's scratches, and laid on a single coat of varnish. Looked good as new.
