I tried that and wasn't satisfied with results. The thing is that toothpicks absorb more epoxy than the surrounding plywood and appear much darker. As for epoxy filler, the best results I got with 50:50 mix of okoume sanding dust and talc. You have to be very careful with this mixture since any drop of it that makes it's way to the surrounding plywood will appear as a brighter, whitish, spot and will require a lot of sanding. And if you trap those white spots under the glass you'll never be able to get rid of them.
