Eric,
Please, be very careful about considering this on your first build. I don't know about your skill level of course, but I'm into my third kayak, and wouldn't trust myself to get the hull glued into a tight and UNTWISTED shape without the aid of stitches. Now, some builders use "fewer" stitches - especially on longer, straighter runs - with no adverse effect, but when suspending the hull, untwisting and laying in those first critical fiber glass tapes, I'd be very nervous about relying only on masking tape.
