Re: cockpit placement

The seat location in a kayak controls the trim of a kayak. Too far forward and it weathercocks (turns into the wind), too far back it leecocks (turns downwind). I always test paddle my kayaks in a good crosswind in the bay before the coaming is installed with the cockpit hole cut as small as possible. Then I adjust the seat location and finsih the cockpit.

I day paddle a lot without cargo and want a wind neutral boat. Even then I still end up adjusting the seat a little when I get it into the open ocean with wind waves. In my standard Chess 17 my seat is 3" behind plan location (I'm 6'-2" 190 lbs.)
