Re: Planing scarf joints
Posted by Jeff on Sep 26, 2005
Have not tried one for this, but have run into other woodworking situations where the hand tools end up netting far better than power tools. It really does not take too much effort to do the joint. I set up multiple joints in a stack, not just a single joint, so it went really fast, but a really sharp plane is the key. At only a few millimeters thickness, it also would not take too much to mess up *really* fast with a power tool and with the lengths required for the hull, a trashed joint ends up not leaving enough for making the long pieces. You could end up trashing some pretty expensive wood that cannot be reused, unless you want a whole lotta bulkheads.
