The big boys

Back in the 70's I had a summer job in a shipyard in San Diego, and that's how they did it too - except that instead of 4 mm okoume it was 40 mm steel, instead of a single bladed saw it was a 4 head plasma cutter and that the "boats" were over 900 feet long and 250 feet wide. Other than that, it was exactly the same :-)

Once the cutting was done, the plate (sized to fit on the largest flatbed 18-wheeler legal at the time) was lifted out of the water bath by electromagnets and deposited in front of yours truly who made the final cuts through the steel with a gas torch. It left the same kind of tabs that you see on the CLC parts.

Kit-built bulk ore carriers anyone?
