Paint & Varnish

I'm planning to paint the bottom of my kayak (just built) and varnish the sides and deck. I'm assuming it would be best to varnish first than paint about 1/2" over the varnish to have a nice matching edge. Is this proper? It would seem difficult to match the varnish edge and the paint edge perfectly.
