Try your hand at building a skin on frame! Pick up Building Skin on Frame Boats by Robert Morris, or Chris Cunningham's book on making Greenland kayaks. Both are well written, and relatively easy to follow. I/m not sure how many trips to home depot you'll need to make though. They really only require some basic hand tools. 'Course then again, maybe a Japanese pull saw, or a nice set of chisels...

I'm just starting to add ribs to mine. Once I'm done with that I'll flip it over and do the final shaping on the stems, touch up the rough edges and start sewing.
