I looks like it has rings (cut PVC pipe?) to hold sail to mast. It also looks like the battens, rather than the sail, may be connected to the rings?

Can you comment? It would be interesting if that is what was done. Rings (I read somewhere) supposedly improve windward sail efficiency by allowing the sail to flop to the lee side of the mast, allowing for less mast interference with the flow on the critical low pressure side of the sail.

But if you don't attach the luff at all, just the battens, it opens up other possibilities: extend the batten a little in order to get the luff away from the mast, separating it from the interference somewhat. And other possibilities...
