Yes, however, not enough.

I had some extra water bottles that I filled with water and put into the forward hatch. I didn't have anywhere near enough.

I will try four gallon jugs. About 1 gallon of water weighs 8 lbs. So if I get 4 gallons, that would be about 50 lbs. My son weighs more but putting the weight in the forward compartment will have a greater effect.

The ballast I was thinking about was just to balance the boat to compensate for the missing paddler.

Otherwise, I was thinking to get those water bags that one can use to weight a pool cover. They are long and slender. Bungied to the center of the floor would be a good way to add ballast in a typical sailboat sense. I think the best ballast for a kayak is the paddler/sailer. If one gets a puff of wind, a quick lean on the windard side will be better than any other dead weight.
