Heya Rog... That whole procedure is a mystery to me. I laid up a set of channeled flanges for my Guillemot rehabilitation project using plain ol' fiberglass and epoxy. It was a rather tedious PITA to pull off, but it worked out well -- on the second attempt. But has there been any advantages to it, over using plain ol' plywood as I did on my Cormorants and Outer Island? Not that I have ever seen.
And why they make 'em black is beyond me too. Only thing I can figger is it's for looks... but who cares what hatch flanges look like? Y' can't even see anything but the gasket for the most part anyway.
