Varnish too thin ?

Is it possible to make the varnish too thin?

The reason I ask is that with three coats top & bottom on my 16 I've only used 1/2 can of varnish. I was expecting to use up more than that.

More coats are planned for, probably another 2 - 3 for this season (anxious to get on the water).

So I was just looking for any advice on overall thickness of varnish finish.
