Paint or Varnish First?

I will be painting the hull plus about 1.5" of deck of my 17LT and varnishing the rest of the deck. I hope this question is not absurd but it was not covered in the book or video. Which portion should I start with? Intuition tells me to start with the varnish so I can cover up any mistakes with the paint. Thanks
