Crystal I just fastened the deck to the hull on my kayak 2 weeks ago , no nails just rope and bungee cords. If you can't get the rope tight enough just slide in a few mixing sticks between the rope and deck at the hull deck joint. the sticks work like wedges and apply presure where it is needed I use stacks of 3 and a small piece of tape to hold them from sliding out.
