Jamie: If you sand, you'll take off the top layer of the plywood and end up with a very dark and nasty looking joint (been there, done that)! Perhaps if the joint is still fresh, not more than a day old, you can work it apart. The longer you wait the tougher it will be. Another thought, maybe a hand saw and some very careful sawing following the scarf, starting on the inside of the panel would work. Good luck and I'm waiting to hear from the real experts on this one.
