Matt,
I've found - in cabinet work - that wiping down with any liquid will make the little "hairs" in the wood stand up - this may snag your cloth.
I would brush off the wood dry with a soft dust brush, vacuume the flor area, and smooth on your cloth. Take your time here. The cloth will eventually follow most of the curves, 'ceptin' at the very stern, witout any problems. I let it settle overnight and go over it once more prior to wet-out. (I actually use the same fine brush that I used for dusting to help smooth the cloth.)
You're getting to the exciting parts now.
