I use a T-Rac removable on my Chevy S-10. Clamps onto the sides, good for 700 lbs (limit is set by what the truck sides can support, not the racks) and costs about $400. The construction is similar to what Karl describes - welded aluminum, T-slots and heavy bolts. Last weekend I was carrying a 16LT and a 14' pirogue at the same time with it at 65 mph. I've had my set for 3 years and do not hesitate to recommend them if they fit your truck.
