This is what I intend to do: make a skeg box out of 3 layers of 6mm ply, the central part will be shaped as greek letter pi, so the skeg slot will not be visible from the inside and no need to fill anything (except the seams) with epoxy. Then round the inside edges and slightly taper the box and insert it into the hole, align and fix it with fillet, then lay a piece of cloth over the box and the fillet with slits cut into it so that it can cover the (almost) whole box in one piece between side panels. The slot will hopefully accept 4-6 mm thick epoxied plywood skeg fixed with silicone.
