Fiberglass battents or rods. (Think tent technology, BTW.) If they were strategically sewn into the cover, the ends could slip into some custom sockets (or Stirrups) on the edge of the gunnel. The rods or battents would flex up like a conestoga wagon and be quite rigid. When you weren't using it you could just roll it up and stow it in a custom sleeve, again, like a tent.
