Bow and stern lines are a safety measure only. I also have a truck with cap that is bolted to the bed. I have a lot of confidence in my set-up but run the lines to the front and back of my truck in the event of an accident. I could think of nothing worse than my boat becoming a missle and harming an innocent by-stander. I run my lines very loose so that there is little or no pressure on the bow and stern. If I remember correctly there have been two people on the board that have had accidents and can tell about the importance of them.
