Okume oars

Posted by Rick Porter on Apr 27, 2005

I'm experementing with building oars out of left over Okume. I've built a 70 degree curved jig and cut the plywood into the "hatchet" styled oars. I'm using three layers of 4mm plywood epoxied together on the jig. Later I'm planning on covering them in a layer of fiberglass. The poles are made out of 8/4 ash which will be cut to match the 70 degree curve of the blades and epoxied and glassed to the back. My question is, has anyone tried this before? Did it work, or am I wasting my time? Any improvements in my plan would be greatly appreciated.
