Re: coaming spacers

the issue of a gap that needs to be filled with glue suggests you need to be more careful to ensure that you have enough clamps providing enough pressure on the coaming as you glue it up.

you cannot glue the spacers together on a flat surface....and then try to attach them/bend them to the hull; they will be too stiff and you will break the hull.

as kurt mentioned....some people (myself included) build the coaming on the hull but put a layer of syran wrap between the spacers and the hull. you do this so they can then remove the coaming and do a great job of sanding the outside of the spacers (under the rim)...that would be impossible to do if the coaming was attached. But in this technique...you still build it on the hull...and lock in the correct bend into the wood.

this technique, however, will not correct for gaps which, as i said earlier, are really because you did not have enough clamping pressure uniformly applied around the coaming...to ensure that you have no gaps.

buy more clamps...and be really careful next time to make sure the surfaces of the coaming spacers come together.
