are not overkill. Tie downs do two things - stabilize the load in cross winds and - keep the load on your vehicle in case of an accident. Bow AND stern lines will keep your kayak from skewing after being buffeted by strong side forces. In a collision where you front-end into someone, the stern line will reduce the distance your yak flies forward into the vehicle you hit.
