Footbrace mounting studs

Howdy all, I'm contemplating the installation of my footbraces on my CLC double. I would like to go with the clean outside look and aviod the screws through the hull. I see CLC sell mounting studs, but $20 a set seems a bit excessive. By the time I get them posted to Vancouver I wont have much change from $50 considering I need two sets. Has anybody made their own with any sucess - they look fairly simple. I was thinking of trolling around the hardware stores to try and find something similar or getting a friend with a lathe to just turn me some and then tap the thead on.
