I go over the boat the day after the second coat was applied with a carbide scraper to remove all runs, bumps and other imperfections. Then I lightly machine sand it, which reveals any other bumps I missed, which I again scrape off. Then I do the third coat and finish sand that, and just spot recoat any places that need it.
There may be other methods that yield a better surface, but this routine accomodates both my abject laziness and my desire for a decent- looking finish.
