The difference is not so much in the chance of banging your knuckles into it, it's that the saw blade is designed to resist radial forces, not lateral ones. Yes, I know you said to use a light touch and you've obviously gotten away with it, but you're still stressing a piece of steel spinning at high speeds in a direction that it was not meant to take a lot of stress in. That's why the sanding disks are thicker.

If you really want to kludge things up for the fun of pushing the envelope, try bolting 2 blades in at once, sort of like a dadoe cutter with no gap. That way you'll have more metal to resist that lateral force.
