Sheer Clamp Wood Type

CLC:
Just wondering what type of wood are the sheer clamps are made from? I am used to working with aircraft quality Stika Spruce in building ultralight sailplanes and these seem heavy at just over 6 pounds out of the kit box compared to spruce spars of similar thickness and width. Of course I realize some weight will be reduced after trimming and shaping the sheer clamps to fit the deck contour but am thinking that if I could save a couple pounds by using spruce instead that it might be worth it. Has anyone else done this and if so was the weight savings worth it?
Thanks,
