The okoume deck material CLC sent me had a beautiful growth ring right where the forward hatch would have gone and I couldn't bring myself to cut it. With the small amount of gear I carry on day trips the aft hatch is fine and pitch attitude of the boat seems uncompromised - especially if I keep the gear forward, against the aft face of the bulkhead.

I have a small scupper bung in the forward bulkhead for draining. It's a stretch to reach but, barring damage, I don't expect to see significant volumes of water up there.
