Mac, grind away until you either have bare wood to work with (read: a pretty stack) that you feel confident with, or go ahead and ruin it (hey, you're never gonna be satisfied with an ugly stack anyway). If the latter becomes the case, simply cut a larger opening and install a recessed cockpit, preferably made with vertical strips of cedar, and with a laminated ash lip. You'll thank heaven those clamps took a walk on you.
