Charlie,
What I did on this most recent deck was to make a quick pass with 80 grit, then with the grain with cabinet scrapers prior to 2 oz glass. This was to ensure removal of any swirls which I noticed showed up through thin glass under certain light on my last boat. (I know I'm being anal, but I figure after practicing on a few boats, I'll go for a coffee table).
I also have way too much time on my hands during these Canadian winters.
Send me masts - I'll load test em' fer ya! The main reason I sand a bit is to ensure that the glass doesn't snag while smoothing it out
