George, If clearcoat was a hot setup you'd see it being used on million dollar wooden boats instead of varnish. Auto paint is not made to take the wear and tear of varnish. It's also made to cover metal or plastic which doesn't move like wood. Auto paint is a lot more difficult to refinish. Varnish or paint can be touched up anytime without much expence. Charlie
