The cockpit opening needs to be rough cut before installing the deck because the pieces at the sides of the cockpit twist to change from the front deck radius to the more shallow rear deck radius. The deck sides run wild past the shears and are trimmed off after curing. You cannot splice the decks off the boat because of the radius change. The front deck piece is wider than the rear deck piece. The CLC Construction Tip is the easiest deck splice method.
