I used the bucket method. It worked fine. If you paint both sides of the joint with unthickened epoxy and then apply the glue, it'll be pretty much impossible to starve.
If you start with an empty bucket and start adding water, sand, whatever, you can adjust the weight with almost the same precision as with screws. So it all comes down to convenience and personal preference.
Scarfs only seem difficult because they're the first step. Kurt's got the right attitude.
