bow beamlet location

I've come to the point in my kit build double where I am instructed to install the fore beam at the bow - location as per the plans. I have looked at the plans again and again and I can't see it on there. How far back from the bow did other double builders place theirs? I imagine 1/3 of the way back of the forward compartment would be about right?

Secondly what is the purpose of this (strength obviously) - but why is it needed here and not at the stern? I would have though any beamlet should be at the stern, right under where the rudder is going to slam into its deck holder every time you pull it up.
