I use drain plugs on the little, hatchless 14s I build. Like John points out, they seem to get the boat dry during storage. Probably won't know for years if the sealed compartment idea is a good one. Each compartment has a small weep hole, which equalizes pressure but also allows moist air inside, which can lead to condensation. One more thing to worry about, if I was energetic enough to worry.
