the rub rail according to the design is attached outside of the plywood..so typically the top edge of the plywood shows.
when i built mine, i thought this combination looked pretty good.....but i can appreciate that others might want to take a different approach.
with respect to taking advantage of the router table, definitely use it to make half round on the outer gunnel pieces. this is much easier to do prior to installing the gunnels compared to after installing the gunnels....however, you will need to be careful around the scarf joints to get this to come together properly.
