Dye/Stain/Paint/Bright

Unless you stain or dye your boat you paint for color as the last step.

If you stain or dye, which you don't seem interested in as you want to cover the grain, you must color before any epoxy is on the surface. The epoxy would hinder stain or dye absorption.

The book "Kayaks You Can Build" illustrates the dye process.
