aaron, keep us posted. this is an interesting project, and your approach has some real advantages.

Do you have a source for cheap wheels? Or was it luck? Those I've seen in a hardware store have always been quite expensive. For my boat, at 200 kg or so, I will need good-sized tires, both dia. and width.

For me (since one doesn't cartop a 200 kg boat) the thought is to be able to roll her up onto a trailer and lash er down. I will have to fashion some kind of rails on a trailer to do that.
