Chesapeake 18

I have been reading the recent discussions about the good and bad points of a CH18. I am 6 ft. and 240 lbs. I was thinking about building a CH 18. However, most of the time I paddle empty with only an occasional camping trip. I paddle in Lake Ontario for the most part and also some smalle lakes as well. Can I get away with a CH17? I do not want to build a boat bigger than I really need, but on the other hand I will not get a chance to build another boat soon if I haven't guesed right.
