Yes there is about 10" from memory ,and I did consider making a day hatch behind the front cockpit.
I also agree with the flooded boat being impossibly unstable.Thats why I went with the extra bulkhead.
The trouble is added (permanent)weght such as day hatches,makes the quick day trip less attractive.
To keep the overall weight down so as to make it lighter for day paddles,I decided that if I need more space to stow gear on multile day trips,to just use dry bags shoved right forward in the rear cockpit. These boats are HUGE in volume and size, so I would encourage anyone building one to think about the intended use (day use or multiple nights)and only build accordingly.
