Yes - it is made from laminating 2 6mm bits - or just one 9mm bit. I'm doing plans, so I don't know what they supply in the kit. Either way, I don't think that a screw would be good. But you are right that a nail might be OK to hold it. I was more concerned about the shear strength of just a glued joint - seeing as the entire weight of the front paddler would be taken by it during a standard entry on the back of the cockpit. ( It takes the place of the rear bulkhead under the rear of the front cockpit rim ) That's why I thought that fillets on either side of the beam would help to spread the load into the sides of the hull. Maybe I'm just being a bit paranoid.
