Hey, Mac,
I guess you're not going to mount ice runners on your yak for the winter.
The other suggestions for storage are all great. Most, however, require expenditure of $, something I avoid at all costs unless there's a gun at my head.
I hang boats from the 8' garage rafters using just a short rope loop around one rafter with an S hook on it. I hook the bow loop in the S hook. I then have a rope tied to a rafter further back, which I run under the stern then over the rafter and pull up the boat. I tie off the rope to the lawn mower, set up the step ladder and run another loop under the boat amidships. Then I tighten the stern loop.
With three loops supporting the boat, there is a safety margin in case one loop fails. But it will take longer to cut the ropes with a knife in the event your mother-in-law walks under the boat.
