Bow/Stern rope handles

I saw a photo of a kayak, I think on this forum, where they used only rope for a handle. But for the place where you actually put your hand, it was looped around and around like a noose. I want to do that with mine. Does anyone have a link to a photo showing that...or even a "how-to" on knotting it that way? Thanks!
