You should be putting the epoxy on thin enough (with a foam roller or squeegee) that it won't move around...even on a vertical surface and even when its just freshly mixed. It should just be too thin of a coat to move around. I didn't have any trouble.
The spit test is a good one. On a lot of my boat I sanded it to just where you could see the weave..but it was smooth. And now that the varnish is on, its beautiful...no glass seen anywhere.
