My Mariner has 1/4" deck bungies that go through the deck and my experience has been that with sharp edged paddle blades they get cut/nicked over time when a paddle blade is tucked under the bungie. With the flat webbing you can have doubled bungie as well as a plastic d-ring in the webbing loop. And a smaller hole through the deck.
