Well, to answer your question, another photo will help.

No bungees to attach it, I screwed it right down permanent. And yep, its a larger compass. On my ches 18 and the double (yep, this is the double and I mounded it in between the 2 cockpits) it looks good.

Not all compasses are this deep. I'm not sure what is involved in all the mass of the unit underneath really. It mounts flush if you make a hole as I did here, but it hangs under the deck a small amount. You can also hook up a battery to make it light up, but I haven't been night paddling yet, so I never hooked that up.
