If you are planning to paddle in rough water, it is good idea to mount the compass as far forward as possable and still easily read it. Looking down in movement leads to sea sickness. Ever read a book in a car on a mountan road?
I use a compass that clips on to the deck. I just don't want to go surfing or rock gardening with an exposed compass. http://www.rei.com/online/store/ProductDisplay?storeId=8000&catalogId=40000008000&productId=12091993&parent_category_rn=0&vcat=REI_SSHP_PADDLING_LD
I have seen the compass shown screwed to the deck with just four screws. The base is rubber is so it conforms to the deck. They also come in yellow.
