CLC offers a mounting block who's bottom can be carved to match the deck at the place you want the compass to be. I used it and like the looks. Used a belt sander in a clamp with course paper to round out the block, contour the bottom of the block and rounded over the top edge. Check the shop tips. and fittings pages of the CLC web site.

I'm sure there are other good ideas out there.
